Chang'e III Probe Can Select Landing Site on Moon by Itself

Dec 06, 2010

Ouyang Ziyuan, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the chief scientist of the China's circumlunar exploration project, pointed out that the Chang'e III lunar probe can intelligently select a landing site on the moon.

The probe can hover at a height of 4 meters above the lunar surface and turn off the engine to achieve a soft landing.

He said the most difficult problem is managing the Chang'e III's descent onto the lunar surface. It will descend and slow down until it reaches a distance of about 100 meters above the surface of the moon. The lander can automatically choose a relatively flat place to land on the lunar surface and achieve a soft landing. (People's Daily Online)
